Habitat and Location:

Tillandsia compressa is an epiphytic air plant native to Colombia, Central America and the Caribbean. It typically grows on tree branches in the humid, elevated forests of these areas. This species thrives in environments with high humidity, good air circulation, and bright, filtered light, making it well-adapted to both cloud forests and lower-elevation forests.

Description:

Tillandsia compressa is known for its rosette of broad, stiff, green leaves that form a dense, vase-like structure. The leaves are often tinged with red or purple at the base. During its blooming phase, Tillandsia compressa produces a tall, vibrant inflorescence with bright pink to red bracts and striking blue or violet tubular flowers.

This species is highly sought after for its architectural form and vibrant colours, making it ideal for indoor mounted displays, drier terrariums, or hanging arrangements. Plants are not suitable for high humidity greenhouses.

Care Instructions:

Tillandsia compressa thrives in bright, indirect light, but can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially during the early morning or late afternoon. It should be mounted or placed in an open display that allows for excellent air circulation. Water the plant by misting 1-2 times a week during the summer and once a fortnight in the winter.

Maintain an intermediate to warm environment with daytime temperatures ranging from 18-28 degrees Celsius and nigh time temperatures between 12-18 degrees. Avoid temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius. This plant prefers moderate humidity but can adapt easily to lower levels. Fertilize monthly during the growing season with a diluted air plant or bromeliad fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and flowering.
