Habitat and Location:

Stelis pittieri, a beautiful terrestrial orchid species from Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador and Peru. This species is widespread and, in some areas, extensive, it inhabits submontane, montane and cloud forests in seasonal at elevations between 750 – 3,200 metres. This species has seen many name changes in the last two decades, including Pleurothallis floribunda and Stelis floribunda.

Description and Key Features:

Stelis pittieri is one of the largest pleurothallids and can stand at 50 cm tall. The ramicauls measure 25-35 cm and the leaves 10-20 cm. The inflorescences emerge from the base of the leaf and produce masses of small cream to pale yellow flowers. The plants vary greatly over the range but the flowers remain relatively similar.

These plants are meticulously grown in pots with a mixed media of moss, fine bark and perlite. This flowering-size specimen promises to be a distinctive addition to your greenhouse, conservatory or indoor space. Thriving in varying light conditions, its shape, size, or colour is not significantly affected although the leaves will yellow if the light levels are too high.

Care Instructions:

Grow Stelis pittieri in a pot, ensuring sufficient air movement, especially in humidity above 50% or grow it in a small bark with a fine bark, charcoal, moss and perlite mix. Provide moderate to low light for growth and flowers, keep plants well watered to mimic natural moisture conditions increasing in frequency during warmer weather and maintain an intermediate or warm greenhouse/terrarium with night temperatures of 10-21 degrees and daytime temperatures of 20-27 degrees. Feed plants all year.
