Habitat and Location:

Sphyrospermum sodiroi, commonly known as a tropical blueberry, is a tropical perennial epiphyte native to the cloud forests of Ecuador. This species grows on tree branches and trunks where it can form large colonies.

Description and Key Features:

Sphyrospermum sodiroi is noted for its attractive, long pendent stems, with graceful leaves, bright red flowers and edible berry fruits. This species produces small, bell-shaped white flowers that develop into small, blueberry-like fruits, which are often dark blue to purple when ripe.

This species is a visually appealing addition to any greenhouse collection, plants will grow indoors but only successfully if given the right cultural conditions. Its trailing habit and charming foliage make it an attractive choice for hanging baskets, mounted displays, or as a unique addition to tropical gardens.

Care Instructions:

For optimal growth, Sphyrospermum sodiroi should be placed in moderate, indirect light. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, it thrives best with average/moderate, filtered sunlight. Ensure the plant is in a well-draining media, such as an epiphytic potting mix with added moss to maintain adequate moisture without waterlogging. Plants prefer being mounted. Water the plant regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy, and reduce the frequency during the cooler months when the plant's growth slows.

Maintain an intermediate environment with daytime temperatures ranging from 18-28 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures between 13-17 degrees Celsius. Sphyrospermum sodiroi prefers high humidity, so regular misting or placing the near a hydrofogger can help maintain the desired moisture levels. This plant benefits from a consistent environment and does not tolerate drafts or sudden temperature changes.
