It naturally occurs in humid, shaded environments—often as an epiphyte on trees or as a terrestrial plant on the forest floor—where it benefits from consistent moisture and filtered light.

Sphyrospermum buxifolium is characterized by its slender, often straggly, pendent branches and alternate, coriaceous leaves. The leaves, sometimes quite thick, exhibit a texture that can feel brittle in certain conditions. During its blooming phase, the plant produces egg-shaped flowers that are white to pale pink with darker tips. These blossoms eventually give way to translucent, violet-tinged edible berries reminiscent of blueberries. This unique combination of delicate foliage and ornamental, fruiting flowers makes the species a distinctive addition to any plant collection.
