Habitat and Location:

Sphyrospermum buxifolium is native to regions spanning from southern Mexico through tropical America. This species typically grows as a hqemiepiphytic subshrub or shrub in wet tropical biomes. It naturally occurs in humid, shaded environments—often as an epiphyte on trees or as a terrestrial plant on the forest floor—where it benefits from consistent moisture and filtered light.

Description:

Sphyrospermum buxifolium is characterized by its slender, often straggly, pendent branches and alternate, coriaceous leaves. The leaves, sometimes quite thick, exhibit a texture that can feel brittle in certain conditions. During its blooming phase, the plant produces egg-shaped flowers that are white to pale pink with darker tips. These blossoms eventually give way to translucent, violet-tinged edible berries reminiscent of blueberries. This unique combination of delicate foliage and ornamental, fruiting flowers makes the species a distinctive addition to any plant collection.

Care Instructions:

To cultivate Sphyrospermum buxifolium successfully, it is important to replicate the moist, humid conditions of its native cloud forest environment. Provide bright, indirect light or partial shade, as direct sunlight can scorch its leaves. Maintain daytime temperatures between 23–2o9°C (64–82°F) and nightime temperatures between 14-19⁵°C ensure that high humidity levels (ideally 60–90% during the day and 70–90% at night) are consistently met—using misting or a humidity tray can be very beneficial. The plant should be grown in a well-draining, organic-rich substrate suitable for epiphytic growth, and it must be watered regularly to keep the medium moist but not waterlogged, allowing slight drying between waterings. Good air circulation is also essential to prevent fungal issues, and a balanced, diluted fertilizer applied monthly during the growing season will help support healthy development.
