Habitat and Location:
Selaginella ornithopodioides, is rare in cultivation, it is native to the tropical forests of Sri Lanka. Information about its growing habits in the wild and its ecology are scare. One can assume that it typically grows in shaded, humid environments on forest floors or rock surfaces, where consistent moisture and diffuse light provide optimal conditions for its growth.
Description:
This compact species is different as its more whispy and shorter than many other Selaginella. Selaginella ornithopodioides has a lush, delicate appearance, with feather-like foliage that forms a soft, green mat. This plant is well-suited and a good choice as a ground cover for terrariums, paludariums or humid greenhouses due to its unique form and high moisture requirements.
Care Instructions:
To grow Selaginella ornithopodioides successfully, aim to replicate its natural tropical environment. It requires high humidity levels of around 70-90% and thrives in low to moderate indirect light. Remember that fans are needed when growing in this humidity. Avoid bright light, which can scorch its delicate leaves. A substrate that retains moisture but drains well, such as a mix of peat and fine orchid bark, will support its growth and prevent root saturation.
Water consistently to keep the substrate evenly moist but avoid waterlogging. Ideal temperatures range from 18-28°C during the day, with slightly cooler nights at around 15-18°C. To maintain humidity, regular misting or placing the plant in a closed terrarium environment will help provide its requirements.
