Habitat and Location:

Selaginella martensii, commonly known as Martens' Spikemoss, is a tropical fern-like plant native to the humid, shaded forests of Central America. This species typically grows in the understories of rainforests, thriving in moist, well-drained soils and shaded environments with consistent humidity. It can be found growing on the forest floor, where the canopy provides protection from direct sunlight.

Description and Key Features:

Selaginella martensii is prized for its delicate, feathery foliage, which resembles a miniature fern or moss. The plant's vibrant, bright green leaves grow in a soft, upright clump, creating a lush, compact form. Under the right conditions, this species produces small, white to pale yellow spore-bearing structures on its tips, adding a subtle ornamental element.

Known for its intricate texture and lush appearance, Selaginella martensii makes a striking addition to terrariums, paludariums, greenhouse or as part of a shaded outdoor garden during the summer months.

Care Instructions:

For optimal growth, Selaginella martensii should be placed in full or partial shade. It prefers consistently moist, well-draining soil, such as a mix rich in organic matter or peat-based substrates that retain moisture without becoming waterlogged. Regular watering is essential, as this species does not tolerate drought well, but be sure to allow the top layer of soil to dry out slightly between waterings.

Maintain a warm, humid environment with daytime temperatures ranging from 18-24 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures between 15-18 degrees Celsius. High humidity, ideally above 70%, is necessary for the health of the plant, so watering frequently or using a humidity tray will help maintain moisture levels. Selaginella martensii is a low-maintenance plant but benefits from a diluted, balanced fertilizer applied every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
