Habitat and ecology:

Selaginella apoda is a lithophyte from the USA, Mexico, Cuba and Guatemala. Plants grow on mossy rocks in deep shade and wet gullies. Plants spread and form ‘cushions’. This species is smaller than many other Selaginella.

Cultivation:

Grow Selaginella apoda on a long cork mount, mossy rock or in a pot using a media which is a mixture of sphagnum moss, perlite and fine bark mix as a media (heavier with moss). Make sure the plant gets sufficient air movement particularly when gown in humidity above 80%; always ensure that humidity is sufficiently high and give the plant moderate shade. Grow plants wet and spray every day if on a mount. This species likes an intermediate to warm greenhouse or terrarium with night low temperatures of 17-22 degrees and daytime temperatures of 23-33 degrees. Give indoor plants low light, air movement, high humidity, consistent watering and make sure that they are growing in a basket/hanging pot.
