Habitat and Location: Sabal bermudana, commonly known as the Bermuda palmetto, is a palm species endemic to Bermuda. It thrives in coastal regions, often near the Atlantic Ocean, due to its high salt tolerance. This species is also frost-tolerant, enduring short periods of temperatures as low as -14°C (6.8°F).
Description:
This fan palm can reach heights up to 25 meters (82 feet), with occasional specimens growing up to 30 meters (98 feet). It features a trunk approximately 55 centimeters (22 inches) in diameter. The leaves are large, measuring 1.5 to 2 meters (5 to 6.5 feet) long, comprising 45 to 60 leaflets up to 75 centimeters (30 inches) in length. The flowers are yellowish-white, about 5 millimeters (0.2 inches) across, arranged in large panicles extending beyond the leaves. The fruit is a deep brown to black drupe, approximately 1 centimeter (0.4 inches) long, containing a single seed.
Care Instructions:
To cultivate Sabal bermudana successfully, plant it in full sun to partial shade, ensuring well-draining soil. While mature palms are drought-tolerant, regular watering during the establishment phase promotes healthy growth. This species is highly salt-tolerant, making it suitable for coastal landscapes. It can withstand temperatures down to -14°C (6.8°F), but protection is advisable in regions with prolonged cold periods. Pruning is typically minimal; removing dead or damaged fronds as needed maintains its appearance. Fertilize sparingly, at least 15 centimeters (6 inches) away from the base, using a slow-release product three times annually.
