Habitat and Location:
Rhododendron × planecostatum is a natural hybrid Vireya Rhododendron species from Mount Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia. The parents are R. bagobonum and R. crassifolium. Plants flourish in temperate woodland environments where they thrive in moist cloud forest climates with acidic soils.
Description:
Rhododendron × planecostatum is prized for its large, showy clusters of funnel-shaped red flowers. The natural hybrid seems to have retained the large flowers from Rhododendron crassifolium and the compact plant habits of Rhododendron bagobonum. The flowers bloom in late spring to early summer, providing a stunning display against the plant's dark green, leathery leaves. The foliage is evergreen, maintaining year-round interest, with a dense, compact growth habit that can form a beautiful, rounded shrub up to one metre tall.
This rhododendron is an ideal choice for high humid greenhouses or conservatories. Plants are sensitive to frost so can only be grown outside from May to October.
Care Instructions:
Rhododendron × planecostatum thrives in partial shade but can tolerate brighter light for short periods and during the winter months. It prefers well-draining, acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 6.0, rich in organic matter. Water the plant regularly, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged, as rhododendrons are sensitive to drought conditions. Mulching around the base of the plant can help retain soil moisture and regulate soil temperature.
Maintain daytime temperatures between 18-27 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures ranging from 10-17 degrees Celsius. Avoid exposing the plant to extreme heat or direct sunlight in hot climates. Fertilize frequently with a dilute acidic fertilizer designed for Rhododendrons applying it in early spring before the blooming season. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain the plant’s shape and encourage healthy growth.
