Habitat and Location:
Psammisia coarctata is a rare and captivating epiphytic shrub native to the lowland forests, tropical cloud forests of Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and Guyana. It is typically found growing on moss-laden tree branches or trunks at elevations between 500 to 2,500 meters. These environments provide the high humidity, cool temperatures, and dappled light that this species thrives in.
Description:
Psammisia coarctata is celebrated for its hummingbird pollinated, tubular flowers that are brightly multicoloured, ranging from deep red to white with a pinkish apex and purple stamens. Plants are medium sized; stems may grow up to 30-90 cm. The waxy, lantern-like blooms hang in clusters from the branches. Its slender stems bear small, glossy, dark green leaves that contrast beautifully with the newest formed leaves which are an orange-brown colour, and the vibrant flowers, making it a visually striking addition to any collection.
The plant’s sprawling growth habit and eye-catching flowers make it an exceptional choice for tropical plant enthusiasts and collectors seeking unique epiphytes.
Care Instructions:
To cultivate Psammisia coarctata, mimic its natural cloud forest habitat by providing bright, filtered light and consistent moisture. It thrives when mounted on cork or grown in a well-draining potting mix with high organic content, such as a blend of orchid bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite. Water regularly to keep the roots moist, but avoid waterlogging. During its active growing season, maintain a steady supply of nutrients using a diluted, balanced fertilizer every 2-3 weeks.
Ideal daytime temperatures are between 23-30°C, with nighttime temperatures dropping to 13-22°C. This species requires high humidity (70-90%), which can be achieved through regular misting, a humidity tray, or a terrarium-like setup. Good air circulation is also essential to prevent fungal issues.
