Habitat and Location:

Pitcairnia maidifolia is a terrestrial or lithophytic bromeliad native to Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panamá, Suriname, and Venezuela . It thrives in rocky slopes, open forests, and cliffside habitats, often growing at elevations between 500 to 2,000 meters. This species is well-adapted to areas with moderate rainfall and dappled sunlight.

Description:

Pitcairnia maidifolia is admired for its long, arching leaves and striking inflorescences. The leaves are bright green, slender, and slightly leathery, forming a fountain-like rosette. Its most notable feature is the vibrant flower spikes, which display tubular red or orange blooms that emerge from tall, slender stems. These flowers attract pollinators such as hummingbirds in the wild.

This bromeliad is a versatile choice for rock gardens, tropical landscapes, or as a potted plant in greenhouses or indoor collections. Its architectural foliage and dramatic blooms make it a standout addition to any space.

Care Instructions:

Pitcairnia maidifolia prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate partial shade. It grows best in well-draining soil, such as a mix of peat, sand, and perlite, mimicking its natural rocky habitat. Water regularly to keep the soil slightly moist but avoid overwatering, as the plant does not tolerate standing water. During dry periods, misting can help maintain adequate humidity.

Maintain daytime temperatures between 20-28°C and nighttime temperatures above 15°C. Protect the plant from frost and sudden temperature changes. Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced, diluted fertilizer to promote healthy growth and flowering. Prune dead leaves or spent flower spikes to encourage new growth.
