Habitat and Location:
Pinanga philippinensis is a clustering palm native to the Philippines, thriving in the country's wet tropical biomes. It is typically found in higher elevation, dense rainforests, preferring warm, sheltered, and moist environments.
Description:
This medium-sized palm reaches up to 3 meters in height, with slender stems approximately 5 centimetres in diameter, often marked by prominent leaf scars forming rings along the trunk. The pinnate leaves, about 1 meter long, consist of numerous closely set linear leaflets, each up to 35 centimetres in length. The leaf sheaths, forming a distinct crown shaft thicker than the stem, exhibit colours ranging from pale green to purplish-brown. Small, creamy white flowers emerge in pendulous panicles up to 30 centimetres long, giving way to ellipsoid fruits that ripen from pink to red and eventually purplish-black
Care Instructions:
To cultivate Pinanga philippinensis successfully, provide a warm, sheltered, and moist environment. The palm thrives in partial shade to indirect light, as direct sunlight can scorch its leaves; aim for 4-6 hours of filtered light daily. Plant it in well-draining soil and maintain consistent moisture levels, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. While it prefers humid conditions, it is adaptable to various soil types. Protect the plant from strong winds to prevent leaf damage. This species is relatively slow-growing and can be propagated by seed or division. Regularly remove dead or damaged fronds to maintain its appearance. Fertilize sparingly, using a balanced, slow-release fertilizer during the growing season to support healthy development. Plants require daytime temperatures between 23-29 degrees and nighttime temperatures between 15-20 degrees.
