Habitat and Location:
Pavonia spinifex is native to regions extending from Florida to the Caribbean. It thrives in seasonally dry tropical biomes, often found in open areas and forest edges where it benefits from well-drained soils and ample sunlight.

Description:

This species is a perennial shrub or small tree, reaching heights of 1.5 to 3 meters. The leaves are ovate to lanceolate in shape, measuring between 5-12 cm in length and 2-5 cm in width, with slightly serrated margins and a rough, hairy texture. The flowers are typically pale yellow to orange, measuring 2-4 cm in diameter, with distinctive spiny sepals that help protect the developing bud. The plant produces a capsule-like fruit containing small seeds adapted for dispersal by wind or animals. The combination of its spiny sepals, bright yellow flowers, and textured foliage makes it a distinctive presence in its native habitat.

Care Instructions:

To cultivate Pavonia spinifex successfully, replicate its natural environment by providing full sun to partial shade and planting in well-draining soil. The plant is adapted to seasonally dry conditions and thus requires moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot. It thrives in daytime temperatures between 20-30°C and nighttime temperatures of 10-18°C. While it can tolerate occasional dips below this range, prolonged exposure to frost should be avoided. Pruning can help maintain a desirable shape and encourage more prolific flowering. While specific fertilization needs are not well-documented, a balanced, diluted fertilizer applied during the growing season may support healthy growth.
