Habitat and Location:
Nematanthus hirtellus, is a tropical perennial epiphyte native to the cloud forests of Brazil’s Atlantic Forest. This species grows on tree branches, and unlike others in the genus which are pendent, this species grows upright.
Description and Key Features:
Nematanthus hirtellus is noted for its attractive, fleshy green leaves and red petioles. This species produces bright yellow fuzzy flowers, and purple calyx’s.
This species is a visually appealing addition to any greenhouse collection and will grow indoors if given the right cultural conditions.
Care Instructions:
For optimal growth, Nematanthus hirtellus should be placed in shade. Ensure the plant is in a well-draining media, such as an epiphytic potting mix with added moss or perlite to maintain adequate moisture without waterlogging. Plants prefer being mounted or in small pots. Water the plant regularly, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings, and reduce the frequency during the cooler months when the plant's growth slows.
Maintain an intermediate environment with daytime temperatures ranging from 22-30 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures between 15-20 degrees Celsius. Nematanthus hirtellus prefers high humidity, so regular misting or placing the plant near a humidity tray can help maintain the desired moisture levels. This plant benefits from a consistent environment and does not tolerate drafts or sudden temperature changes.
