Habitat and Location:
Medinilla miniata is native to the tropical rainforests of the Philippines, specifically thriving in regions such as Luzon and Mindanao. It grows as an epiphyte with orchids, attaching itself to tree trunks and branches in the humid understory of these rainforests, where it benefits from the high moisture and filtered light conditions. This species prefers the cloud forests, where mist and humidity levels are consistently high, making it an ideal plant for tropical environments.
Description:
Medinilla miniata is renowned for its vivid coral-red to orange blooms that cascade in striking pendant inflorescences. These flowers are long-lasting and provide a vibrant contrast to the dark green, glossy, elliptical leaves. Plants grow to 1.5 metres. The leaves, with their leathery texture, measure 30 cm. This species grows in a compact, shrubby form, making it ideal for cultivation in greenhouses or well-lit indoor spaces.
Care Instructions:
For optimal growth, place Medinilla miniata in bright, indirect light, similar to the dappled sunlight it would receive in its native habitat. It requires a well-draining potting acidic mix, such as a blend of orchid bark, charcoal, and perlite, to maintain moisture without waterlogging. Water the plant regularly, keeping the soil evenly moist but not saturated.
Maintain an intermediate to warm environment with daytime temperatures of 18-26 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures between 16-20 degrees Celsius. High humidity is essential for Medinilla miniata, so mist the plant regularly or use a humidifier to keep humidity levels above 60%. Fertilize every two weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer to promote healthy growth and abundant flowering.
