Habitat and Location:
Licuala peltata var. sumawongii, commonly known as Sumawong's Fan Palm, is native to the tropical rainforests of Thailand and Peninsula Malaysia, particularly found in humid valleys and ravines. This palm thrives in warm, moist environments with high humidity, making it well-suited to tropical and subtropical regions.
Description:
This moderately sized palm typically reaches a height of about 3 meters (9 feet) over 15 years. It features a crown comprising 12 to 15 large, flat, circular, undivided fan-shaped leaves that can measure up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) across. The leaves are dark green, pleated, and provide a lush, tropical appearance. Due to their size and shape, the leaves are susceptible to wind damage, so a sheltered planting location is advisable.
Care Instructions:
To cultivate Licuala peltata var. sumawongii successfully, provide a warm, humid environment with partial sun bright, indirect light. While the palm can tolerate some sun, it is best suited to a sheltered position to protect its large leaves from wind damage. Plant it in well-draining, loamy soil that retains moisture, and maintains consistent soil moisture without waterlogging. Regular watering is essential, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. This species is more tolerant of cool conditions than many other Licuala varieties, withstanding temperatures down to 3°C (37°F), but it is advisable to protect it from frost. Fertilize sparingly with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer during the growing season to support healthy development.
