Habitat and Location:

Licuala paludosa, commonly known as the Mangrove Fan Palm, is a tropical palm species native to Andaman Is., Borneo, Cambodia, Malaya, Sumatra, Thailand, and Vietnam. It typically grows in swampy, lowland areas, including mangrove forests and peatlands, thriving in waterlogged, nutrient-rich soils.

Description:

Licuala paludosa is a small to medium-sized palm noted for its striking circular, pleated leaves divided into fan-shaped segments. Plants can grow to 2 metres tall but often less when grown in a pot. The palm produces small, inconspicuous flowers followed by clusters of bright red to orange fruits that are a favourite among wildlife.

This slow-growing species is prized for its compact size and ornamental foliage, making it suitable for small gardens, patios, or as a container plant in tropical and subtropical climates. It is an excellent choice for creating a lush, tropical aesthetic in shaded or waterlogged areas. Grow indoors, in a conservatory or greenhouse. If growing outdoors, you will need to shelter it during the cooler months.

Care Instructions:

Licuala paludosa prefers partial to full shade and thrives in consistently moist, well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods, to maintain its preference for high humidity and damp conditions. This palm is sensitive to prolonged drought and benefits from a thick mulch layer to retain soil moisture.

Maintain daytime temperatures between 23-30°C, and nighttime temperatures between 14-18. Plants do not tolerate frost. Protect it from strong winds, which can damage the delicate leaves. Fertilize with a balanced, slow-release palm fertilizer during the growing season to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage.
