Habitat and Location:
Kohleria warszewiczii is a captivating plant native to the cloud forests of Colombia. It thrives in the humid, shaded environments of montane forests, growing as an understory plant in well-drained, organically rich soils. These regions provide moderate temperatures and high humidity essential for their growth.
Description:
Kohleria warszewiczii is an herbaceous perennial prized for its velvety, dark green leaves adorned with silvery veins. The plant produces tubular flowers that have a pink corolla on the outside and yellow on the inside. The lobules of the corolla create an intricate yellow with red spots.
Ideal for terrariums, greenhouses, indoor growing, or shaded outdoor spaces during the warmer months, this plant’s lush foliage and exotic flowers make it a favourite among collectors of tropical plants. Its compact and trailing habit also makes it suitable for hanging baskets or mounted displays.
Care Instructions:
Kohleria warszewiczii thrives in moderately bright, indirect light and high humidity. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves. Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix to mimic its natural environment and ensure good aeration. Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings.
Maintain daytime temperatures of 18-24°C and nighttime temperatures of 12-16°C. High humidity (60-80%) is ideal; consider misting the plant or placing it near a humidifier. Feed with a balanced, diluted fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during the growing season and reduce feeding during its dormant period.
