Habitat and Location:
Kalanchoe tomentosa, commonly known as the Panda Plant, is a distinctive succulent native to the arid regions of Madagascar. It is typically found in rocky, well-drained soils in sunny and semi-shaded habitats, where it has adapted to withstand periods of drought. Its natural environment includes scrublands and dry forests, where it thrives in warm, dry conditions.
 
Description:
Kalanchoe tomentosa is admired for its unique, velvety foliage. Plants grow to about 30 cm. The plant features thick, elongated, ovate leaves covered with a dense layer of soft, silvery-gray hairs, giving it a fuzzy texture. The leaves are edged with brown to dark red spots along the margins. Over time, this slow-growing species forms upright, branching stems, making it a popular choice for potted arrangements or as part of a succulent collection. While flowering is rare in indoor cultivation, mature plants may produce small, tubular, greenish-yellow flowers in optimal outdoor conditions.
 
Care Instructions:
Kalanchoe tomentosa thrives in bright, indirect light to full sun. Indoors, place it near a south- or west-facing window to ensure it receives adequate light. Use a well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix to prevent root rot, and water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering frequency during the cooler months when the plant enters a period of dormancy.
 
This species prefers warm temperatures ranging from 18-24°C during the day and tolerates nighttime temperatures down to 10°C. Low humidity levels mimic its native habitat, so additional humidity is not necessary. Fertilize once every 4-6 weeks during the active growing season with a diluted succulent fertilizer to support healthy growth.
