Habitat and Location:
Justicia floribunda, commonly known as the Brazilian fuchsia or shrimp plant, is native to Brazil and Argentina, where it grows in the warm, humid understory of tropical and subtropical forests. This species thrives in shaded to partially sunny environments, often found in areas with consistent moisture and high humidity.
Description:
Justicia floribunda is a compact, bushy evergreen shrub prized for its year-round vibrant blooms. Its tubular, salmon-pink flowers feature golden-yellow accents, resembling miniature shrimp, which attract pollinators such as hummingbirds and butterflies. The flowers emerge from the tips of its branches, contrasting beautifully with its small, dark green, ovate leaves.
This plant’s long blooming period and compact size make it an ideal choice for adding a splash of colour to indoor spaces, patios as an annual, or shaded garden beds again asan annual. It also performs well in containers and hanging baskets, where its cascading growth habit can be showcased.
Care Instructions:
To ensure healthy growth, place Justicia floribunda in bright, indirect light, although it can tolerate partial shade. Use a well-draining potting mix and water regularly, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering slightly during cooler months when the plant’s growth slows.
Maintain daytime temperatures between 18-25°C and nighttime temperatures no lower than 10°C. This species thrives in high humidity, so regular misting or placement near a humidifier is recommended for indoor cultivation. Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the active growing season to promote continuous blooming and healthy foliage.
