Habitat and Location:

Heliotropium arborescens, commonly known as heliotrope or cherry pie plant, is native to Peru in South America. It thrives in subtropical to tropical climates and is often found in sunny, well-drained areas such as open woodlands and meadows. This species has also become a popular ornamental plant cultivated worldwide for its striking flowers and pleasant fragrance.

Description:

Heliotropium arborescens is a compact shrub, typically growing 30-60 cm tall and wide. In cultivation a bushy, perennial shrub known for its clusters of small, violet to purple flowers that emit a sweet, vanilla-like fragrance. The blooms are arranged in dense, flat-topped inflorescences that attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. The plant's leaves are dark green, ovate, and textured.

This versatile plant is often used in gardens, borders, and containers as an annual. It’s a tropical perennial however, and grows well in greenhouses, outdoors from spring to autumn, in aerated terrariums, conservatories, and indoors as a house plant.

Care Instructions:

Heliotropium arborescens grows in full sun to partial shade and needs well-draining, fertile soil. It should be watered regularly but allowed to dry slightly between waterings to avoid root rot. During the growing season, feed the plant with a balanced fertilizer frequently to encourage continuous blooming.

Maintain daytime temperatures between 18-27°C and nighttime between 10-17°C. Although moderately tolerant of drought once established, it benefits from consistent moisture in hotter climates. This plant also enjoys moderate humidity and good air circulation. Prune regularly to encourage bushier growth and remove spent flowers to promote new blooms.
