Habitat and Location:
Epidendrum blepharoclinium is a striking orchid species native to the montane forests of Peru, and Ecuador. This species thrives at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 2,850 meters, where it grows as an epiphyte on tree trunks or occasionally as a lithophyte on mossy rocks. It flourishes in the cool, humid conditions of cloud forests under the dappled light of the forest canopy.
Description:
Epidendrum blepharoclinium is admired for its vibrant and unique flowers. The blossoms are typically small, but their striking colour and appearance like a firework make them stand out. The flowers are borne on upright or arching inflorescences that emerge from slender, cane-like stems. The plant’s narrow, lance-shaped leaves complement the floral display, adding to its ornamental appeal.
Care Instructions:
Epidendrum blepharoclinium prefers bright, indirect light, similar to the dappled sunlight found in its natural habitat. It thrives in a well-draining orchid mix, such as a combination of bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite, or can be mounted on cork or tree fern slabs for a more natural presentation. Please note that sufficient space is required for mounted plants. Water regularly during active growth, keeping the roots moist but not soggy, and reduce watering during cooler months when the plant is less active.
Maintain daytime temperatures of 18-25°C and nighttime temperatures of 14-18°C. This orchid appreciates high humidity (60-80%) and good air circulation to mimic its natural environment and prevent fungal issues. Fertilize with a balanced orchid fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during the growing season, reducing feeding during dormancy.
