Habitat and Location:
Drymonia affinis, is a tropical perennial epiphyte native to the Amazon and Andean rainforests of South America, particularly in countries like Ecuador and Colombia. This species grows on tree branches and trunks where it creeps through the trees and is pollinated by hummingbirds.
Description and Key Features:
Drymonia affinis is noted for its attractive, creeping stems, with bright coloured flowers. The plant features glossy green leaves with a lush, tropical appearance. This species produces striking flattened flowers that are typically bright red and yellow, adding a splash of colour to any collection or greenhouse setting.
This species is a visually appealing addition to any greenhouse collection, though it will grow indoors only if given the right cultural conditions. Its trailing habit and charming foliage make it an attractive choice for mounted displays, in a greenhouse or large paludarium/terrarium.
Care Instructions:
For optimal growth, Drymonia affinis should be placed in moderate, indirect light. Provide air movement in high humidity conditions although I haven’t known the leaves to melt. Ensure the plant is in a well-draining media, such as an epiphytic potting mix with added moss to maintain adequate moisture without waterlogging. Plants prefer being mounted or in a basket. Water the plant regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy, and reduce the frequency during the cooler months when the plant's growth slows.
Maintain an intermediate environment with daytime temperatures ranging from 18-33 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures between 13-17 degrees Celsius. Drymonia affinis prefers high humidity, so regular misting or placing the plant near a hydrofogger can help maintain the desired moisture levels. This plant benefits from a consistent environment and does not tolerate drafts or sudden temperature changes.
