Habitat and Ecology:
Dracula chestertonii is from Columbia in the middle of the country along the Cordillera range. In the wild this species inhabits cloud forest at elevations between 1,500 - 2,200 metres.
Description:
Leaves measure 10-18 cm and 2.5-3.0 cm wide, they are an elliptic shape. Inflorescence’s measure 20-35cm and bear successively opening flowers that each measure 15cm from tail to tail. Plants bloom in the autumn.
Cultivation:
Grow Dracula chestertonii in a net pot or basket and use loosely packed sphagnum moss as a media. Make sure plants get sufficient air movement particularly when gown in humidity above 80%; always ensure that humidity is high and give plants moderate to deep shade. Plants need to be grown wet; I grow my Dracula species sitting in shallow water and I remove this species from water once spike are seen. This avoids the spikes growing downwards into the water. This species grows well in an intermediate to cool greenhouse or indoors in suitable conditions, including, a difference between day and night temperature, air movement and humidity.
