Habitat and Ecology:

Disterigma alaternoides, commonly known as "capulí silvestre," "flapilla," or "albricias," is a species of shrub in the family Ericaceae. It is native to regions spanning from Panama through western South America, including Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. This plant thrives in various habitats such as premontane wet forests, montane moist and wet rainforests, scrub vegetation, subpáramo, and páramo ecosystems. It is typically found at elevations ranging from 1,600 to 3,900 meters, with a more common occurrence between 2,400 and 3,400 meters.

Description:

Disterigma alaternoides is a shrub that can reach heights of up to 3 meters. It features dark green, leathery leaves that are lighter on the underside. Although leaves will be a lighter colour when grown in brighter light. The plant produces small, yellow flowers arranged in fasciculate inflorescences surrounded by a series of small bracts. Its fruit is a translucent white to reddish-purple or wine-colored capsule, approximately 1 millimeter in diameter, and is edible.

Cultivation:

In cultivation, Disterigma alaternoides prefers cool, humid conditions similar to its native high-altitude habitats. Ideal daytime temperatures range between 15°C to 22°C (59°F to 72°F), while nighttime temperatures should be maintained between 7°C to 13°C (45°F to 55°F), although can be warmer. The plant thrives in well-draining, acidic soils rich in organic matter. It benefits from partial shade to mimic the understory conditions of its natural environment. Regular watering is essential to maintain consistent soil moisture, but care should be taken to avoid waterlogging. Mulching can help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.
