Habitat and Location:
Dendrobium trantuanii, an endemic epiphytic species found in northwest Vietnam in seasonal and drier forest growing at elevations between 800 – 1,000 metres. This species was described as recently as 2003.
Description and Key Features:
Dendrobium trantuanii is a striking orchid with a waxy long-lasting flower measuring 5 cm across, and with a remarkable brown or black furry lip against a backdrop of pastel pink. Plants produce 4-12 pseudobulbs that have obvious internodes on them. The internodes are enveloped by sheaths. Each pseudobulb bears 3-8 oblong but small leaves. Each inflorescence emerges in the spring and bears 1-3 unscented flowers. rarely grow beyond 25 cm. This plant is meticulously grown on a mount, this flowering-size specimen promises to be a distinctive addition to your greenhouse, terrarium, or paludarium. Thriving in varying light conditions, its shape, size, or colour is not significantly affected although the leaves will yellow if the light levels are too high.
Care Instructions:
Grow Dendrobium trantuanii on a mount for optimal air circulation, ensuring sufficient air movement, especially in humidity above 50% or grow it in a small bark with a fine bark, charcoal and perlite mix. Provide moderate light for growth and flowers, spray lightly daily to mimic natural moisture conditions increasing in frequency during warmer weather and maintain an intermediate or warm greenhouse/terrarium with night temperatures of 14-21 degrees and daytime temperatures of 23-31 degrees. Feed plants all year.
