Habitat and ecology:

Dendrobium jacobsonii is a species endemic to two mountains on Java and at high elevations. This cool growing species is only found in the upper elevations and has a reputation of dying when taken from the wild and exposed to warmer temperatures at lower altitudes.

Description:

The canes can measure up to 30cm in dark conditions but are generally shorter. The inflorescence is short and bears bright red flowers that measures about 1.5cm across. Most sources state that the plant blooms during the winter and spring although I have had a bloom during autumn.

Cultivation:

Grow Dendrobium jacobsonii on a mount or in a pot with medium sized nark and perlite. Give your plant moderate light and keep it evenly moist during the warmer months and drier during the winter months, but never let it dry out completely. Grow plants in cool temperatures with night-time temperatures of 10 - 15 degrees and daytime temperatures of 23 to 27 degrees. Plants grow well indoors in suitable conditions but will only flower if given sufficient light.
