Habitat and Ecology:
Dendrobium heokhuii is an epiphytic orchid species native to Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo. It typically inhabits riverine forests, often near water sources, at elevations ranging from sea level up to 90 meters. This species thrives in wet tropical biomes, where it grows primarily as a warm growung epiphyte.
Description:
This orchid features small, pseudobulbous growths with slender, terete (cylindrical) leaves. The flowers are delicate, measuring approximately 1 to 1.2 centimeters in width, and typically appear singly at the upper ends of the stems or on side branches. The blossoms exhibit a white to pale pink hue with subtle purple striations. Dendrobium heokhuii has the potential to bloom multiple times throughout the year.
Cultivation:
To successfully cultivate Dendrobium heokhuii, replicate its natural hot and humid environment. Maintain daytime temperatures between 26°C to 35°C (86°F to 95°F) and nighttime temperatures between 20°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F). Provide bright, indirect light, such as that from an east-facing window or a slightly shaded southern exposure. Places the plant on a mount or grow in a pot using a well-draining orchid mix. Water the plant once or twice a week, allowing the medium to dry slightly between waterings to prevent root rot, water every day if mounted. Ensure high humidity levels, ideally between 50% and 70%, and good air circulation to mimic its native habitat.
