Habitat:
Datura metel, commonly known as Devil's Trumpet or Angel's Trumpet, is native to the Americas, specifically the Greater Antilles. Over time, it has become naturalized in various warmer regions worldwide, including parts of Asia and Africa. The plant typically grows in grasslands, brushwood, forests dominated by teak, and along riverbanks, thriving at altitudes of up to 2,100 meters.
Description:
Datura metel is a shrub-like annual or short-lived perennial that can reach heights of up to 1.4 meters. It features hollow stems that are green or purple-black and bear simple, alternate leaves that are oval to broad oval in shape, often dark violet in color. The plant produces large, short-lived, trumpet-shaped flowers that can be single or double, with colors ranging from white to cream, yellow, red, and violet. These pleasantly scented flowers are particularly aromatic at night. The seed capsules are covered with numerous conical warts or short, sparse spines.
Cultivation:
Datura metel prefers full sun and thrives in rich, moist, well-drained soil. It tolerates average soil conditions and can withstand alkaline or sandy soils but does not perform well in full shade. In regions with colder climates, it is typically grown as an annual, while in warmer zones (USDA Zones 9 to 10), it may act as a short-lived perennial.
Propagation:
Propagation is primarily through seeds. Sow the seeds in well-draining soil in a sunny location. Germination typically occurs within 2 to 4 weeks. It's advisable to start seeds indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last expected frost or directly outdoors after all frost danger has passed. Watering Datura seeds thoroughly for 4-5 consecutive days usually results in a quicker germination.
Caution:
All parts of Datura metel contain tropane alkaloids, which are toxic if ingested. The plant has a history of use in traditional medicine, but due to its potential for causing hallucinations, delirium, and even death, any medicinal use should be approached with extreme caution and under professional supervision. Do not ingest any part of this plant.
