Habitat and Location:
Cuphea viscosissima, commonly known as Blue Waxweed or Clammy Cuphea, is native to the eastern and southern United States and Mexico. This annual herb thrives in a variety of habitats, including meadows, forest edges, and open, disturbed areas with full to partial sunlight. It is well-adapted to warm, temperate and subtropical climates and is often found in prairies, roadsides, and other sun-drenched spaces where the soil is well-draining.
Description:
Cuphea viscosissima is a compact, branching plant characterized by its sticky stems and lance-shaped green leaves, which are covered with fine hairs. The plant produces an abundance of small, tubular flowers with a vibrant mix of purple, violet, or pink petals. The flowers bloom from midsummer into early autumn, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Its sticky, glandular foliage is distinctive, giving the plant a slightly “clammy” feel, hence one of its common names.
This species is ideal for hardy tropical gardens and wildflower pollinator-friendly landscapes adding a pop of colour during the growing season.
Care Instructions:
Cuphea viscosissima thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. It prefers well-draining soil, though it can adapt to various soil types, from sandy to loamy. Water the plant moderately, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings, as it is relatively drought-tolerant once established.
For best growth, maintain daytime temperatures between 18-30 degrees Celsius, and nighttime temperatures should range from 03-20 degrees Celsius. This species is not frost-tolerant, so in cooler climates, it is best grown as an annual. Fertilization is generally not necessary, but a light application of balanced fertilizer can be used in poor soils to promote healthy growth. Deadheading spent flowers will encourage continuous blooming throughout the season.
