Habitat and Location:

Cuphea subuligera is a perennial flowering plant native to Mexico’s state of Chiapas. It typically grows in open, sunny areas such as grasslands, rocky hillsides, and disturbed habitats, thriving at elevations between 500 and 1,500 meters. It is well-adapted to warm climates with moderate rainfall.

Description:

This species is characterized by its upright, bushy growth habit and slender, linear leaves that give the plant a delicate appearance. Cuphea subuligera produces vibrant, tubular flowers in shades of orange to red, with a slightly curved shape that attracts hummingbirds and pollinators in its native range. The long-blooming nature of the plant makes it a standout addition to ornamental gardens or container displays.

Care Instructions:

Cuphea subuligera thrives in well-draining soil with moderate moisture levels. A sandy or loamy soil mix is ideal, and the plant benefits from regular watering during the growing season while tolerating short periods of drought once established. Place in full sun to partial shade for optimal flowering, though it prefers brighter light conditions.

Maintain temperatures above 10°C, as this plant is not frost-tolerant. Across the country, it can be grown as an annual or brought indoors for the winter. Feeding with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer during the active growing season will encourage lush growth and prolific flowering. Deadheading spent blooms can help extend the flowering period.
