Cuphea hyssopifolia, is a tropical perennial plant native to the rainforests of Central America. This terrestrial species thrives along the banks of rivers in disturbed and primary forests. Also found in mountain forests up to 2,400 metres elevation.

Key Features:

Cuphea hyssopifolia is noted for its colourful displays of pink flowers and its compact size. Plants can grow to 60 cm high and 80 cm across. The leaves are narrow and small. The flower colour ranges in shades of pink and alba forms are also known.

This species is a visually stunning addition to any greenhouse or conservatory collection and can also be grown indoors if given the right cultural conditions. Plants could be kept in a large terrarium but will need constant pruning and likely to suffer from melting without air movement. Its impressive year-round flowering and small size make it an attractive choice for tropical planters or as a statement piece in tropical gardens.

Care Instructions:

For optimal growth, Cuphea hyssopifolia should be placed in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, it thrives best with ample, filtered sunlight. Ensure the plant is in a well-draining soil mix, such as a combination of soil, perlite, and orchid bark to maintain adequate moisture without waterlogging. Water the plant regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy, make sure this plant does not dry out.

Maintain a warm environment with daytime temperatures ranging from 22-36 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures between 6-18 degrees Celsius. Cuphea hyssopifolia prefers high humidity, so regular misting or placing the plant near a humidity tray can help maintain the desired moisture levels. This plant needs good air circulation and should be kept away from cold drafts or sudden temperature changes.
