Habitat and Location:

Crossandra infundibuliformis, commonly known as Firecracker Flower, is found in Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, India and Sri Lanka. This species thrives in warm, humid environments, often found in the shaded understory of forests or in open, sunny areas with partial shade. It is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical gardens for its bright flowers and is also a popular indoor plant in temperate regions.

Description:

Crossandra infundibuliformis is a compact, bushy shrub known for its vibrant, funnel-shaped orange flowers that can also bloom in shades of red, or yellow. The flowers are arranged in dense, cylindrical spikes, creating a stunning display that lasts throughout much of the year. Its glossy, dark green leaves provide a lush backdrop to the striking flowers, enhancing its overall beauty. The glossiness of the leaves varies depending on the amount of darkness the plant is grown in.

Perfect for a greenhouse (watch for leaf melt in high humid/low air movement environments), shaded conservatory, indoors or larger terrarium/paludarium.

Care Instructions:

Crossandra infundibuliformis thrives in moderate shade, but can tolerate some indirect sunlight, particularly in the morning. It prefers well-draining soil rich in organic matter, such as a fake peat-based mix with added perlite and fine orchid bark. Water the plant regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy, and reduce watering slightly during the winter months.

Maintain daytime temperatures between 18-30 degrees Celsius, and nighttime temperatures should range from 15-20 degrees Celsius. This plant enjoys high humidity levels and should never dry out. Fertilize every water during the growing season with a diluted balanced, water-soluble fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and continuous blooming. Protect the plant from cold drafts and sudden temperature drops, it is sensitive to frost.
