Habitat and Location:

Columnea labellosa is a tropical hummingbird pollinated epiphyte native to the cloud forests of Colombia. This species grows on tree branches and trunks, where it can form stunning displays of colour and hangs gracefully.

Description and Key Features:

Columnea labellosa is noted for its attractive, trailing stems, with small, glossy hairy leaves, and vibrant, tubular flowers. The plant features dark green leaves. This species produces striking red flowers.

This species is a visually appealing addition to any greenhouse collection, though it will grow indoors only if given the right cultural conditions. Plants will grow in a terrarium but will need to be pruned. Its trailing habit and charming foliage make it an attractive choice for hanging baskets, mounted displays, or as a unique addition to tropical gardens.

Care Instructions:

For optimal growth, Columnea labellosa should be placed in shade. While it can tolerate moderate light conditions, it thrives best with, filtered sunlight. Ensure the plant is in a well-draining media, such as an epiphytic potting mix with added moss and perlite to maintain adequate moisture without waterlogging. Plants prefer being mounted or in hanging baskets. Water the plant regularly, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings, and reduce the frequency during the cooler months when the plant's growth slows.

Maintain an intermediate environment with daytime temperatures ranging from 21-28 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures between 14-19 degrees Celsius. Columnea labellosa prefers high humidity, so regular misting or placing the plant near a humidity tray can help maintain the desired moisture levels. This plant benefits from a consistent environment and does not tolerate drafts or sudden temperature changes.
