Habitat and Location:
Remusatia pumila, commonly known as the Dwarf Elephant Ear or Hitchhiker Elephant Ear, is a tropical perennial plant native to the Himalayan regions, including Nepal, Bhutan, and India. This species thrives in shaded, moist environments, often found growing on the forest floor or in rocky crevices within subtropical and tropical forests.
Description and Key Features:
Remusatia pumila is noted for its attractive, heart-shaped leaves with a glossy, green surface. The leaves are supported by long petioles, giving the plant a striking, upright appearance. This species can produce small, yellow to orange spathes, which are characteristic of the Araceae family, adding a touch of colour and interest during its blooming period.
The leaves have a slight two tone colouring to them. This is one of only a couple of Aroid that can genuinely be grown in a terrarium. This is a dwarf form of the usual species. This species can also be grown outdoors in the UK year round giving hardy tropical garden growers an Aroid that is suitable for this climate.
Care Instructions:
For optimal growth, Remusatia pumila should be placed in moderate to low light. Ensure the plant is in a well-draining soil mix, such as a combination of soil, perlite, and orchid bark to maintain adequate moisture without waterlogging. Water the plant regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy, and reduce the frequency during the cooler months when the plant's growth slows.
Maintain an intermediate to warm environment with daytime temperatures ranging from 18-28 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures between -5-15 degrees Celsius.
