Habitat and Location:
Coelogyne zahlbrucknerae is a striking orchid species native to the montane forests of the Philippines, particularly in the island of Luzon. This orchid is found growing as an epiphyte on tree trunks and large branches at elevations between 800 and 1,500 meters, where it thrives in cool to intermediate temperatures and high humidity, often under the protective shade of the forest canopy.
Description:
Coelogyne zahlbrucknerae resembles Coelogyne lawrenceana and Coelogyne eberhardtii, and all of these are also known for their beautiful scent. The blossoms are creamy white to pale yellow, with a distinctive, ruffled lip marked by intricate patterns of orange or brown veins. The flowers emerge from stout pseudobulbs, accompanied by long, lance-shaped, glossy green leaves that enhance the plant's overall appeal. Before now, we have only sold one plant of this species since 2011.
Care Instructions:
Coelogyne zahlbrucknerae thrives in bright, indirect light and benefits from consistent moisture. Pot it in a well-draining orchid mix with bark and sphagnum moss, or mount it on cork or tree fern to mimic its natural epiphytic habitat. Keep the medium evenly moist during at all times.
Maintain daytime temperatures between 24-29°C and nighttime temperatures around 14-20°C. High humidity (60-80%) is essential, along with good air circulation to prevent fungal issues. Feed the plant every 2-3 weeks during active growth with a balanced orchid fertilizer, reducing feeding in the cooler months when growth slows.
