Habitat and Location:
Coelogyne squamulosa is an orchid species native to Borneo, primarily from Kalimantan and with a few records from Mount Penrissen near Kuching, Sarawak. It typically grows as a pseudobulbous epiphyte in wet equatorial rainforests.
Description:
This orchid is an average sized Coelogyne, the inflorescences are pendent and produce one of the most attractive and wonderfully scented flowers in the genus. The pendent inflorescences measure 15-25 cm and bear several flowers. The flowers measure 7-9 cm. Plants are suitable for growing indoors, in a greenhouse or in a conservatory.
Care Instructions:
For optimal growth, Coelogyne squamulosa requires bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent leaf burn. Maintaining high humidity levels, ideally between 55% to 80%, is beneficial, with brisk air circulation to prevent leaf spot fungi. Watering should be consistent, keeping the potting medium moist but not waterlogged. During active growth, fertilize regularly with a balanced orchid fertilizer, reducing frequency during dormancy. Repotting is best done only when necessary and in the spring when new growth starts, using a well-draining medium such as a fine-grade potting mix or sphagnum moss.
Grow in an intermediate greenhouse and with night-time temperatures of 16 to 21 degrees and daytime temperatures of 26 to 30 degrees.
