Cattleya coccinea is a species from Brazil and until recently was known as Sophronitis coccinea. In the wild this species grows on moss covered trees in partly shaded conditions within the Atlantic Forest belt and at elevations between 650 - 1,500 metres. Inflorescences are short, bear solitary flowers that each measure 3-7 cm across and are large compared to the size of the plant. Plants flower during the spring. The flower colour is varied.

Grow Cattleya coccinea on a mount or in a pot with and open fine bark media. Grow your plant in bright light and allow it to dry in between watering. Plants need to dry rapidly after watering although roots need to be in a humid environment constantly. Plants grow well in an intermediate to cool greenhouse and they appreciate night-time temperatures of 12-16 degrees and daytime temperatures of 25 to 28 degrees. Plants are suitable for growing indoors and will flower if given sufficient light, cool and humid fresh air, and humidity around the roots.
