Habitat and Location:

Bulbophyllum korthalsii is a very rare striking orchid species native to Borneo, Sumatra, Peninsula Malaysia, and Java. It grows as an epiphyte in tropical lowland and montane forests, at elevations ranging from 500 to 1,500 meters. The species thrives in warm, humid environments, often attached to tree trunks or large branches under the protective canopy of dense forests.

Description:

Bulbophyllum korthalsii produces pendulous inflorescences adorned with numerous, intricately patterned flowers. The flowers are white. The flowers often exude a musky scent, which is characteristic of many species in the genus. Its pseudobulbs are compact and round, measure 2-4 cm, bearing a single, leathery leaf measuring 15-25 cm.

This Bulbophyllum is ideally suited for a humid greenhouse or warm terrarium/paludarium. Plants will only grow and flower indoors under the right conditions and are not for beginners.

Care Instructions:

To cultivate Bulbophyllum korthalsii successfully, provide bright, indirect light and warm temperatures. This orchid thrives when mounted on cork or tree fern with moss under the roots or in a well-draining potting mix suitable for epiphytes. Keep the medium evenly moist during active growth but allow for slight drying between waterings during cooler months. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot, although this is less likely with mounted plants.

Maintain daytime temperatures of 22-30°C and nighttime temperatures between 15-20°C. High humidity levels (60-80%) and consistent air circulation are essential for healthy growth. Feed with a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-3 weeks during the growing season, reducing feeding during dormancy.
