Habitat and Location: 
Bulbophyllum gibbosum is a species from Borneo, Peninsula Malaysia, Sumatra, and Java. In the wild this species is found in humid hill forests as an epiphyte at elevations between 800 and 1,200 metres. This species thrives in the humid understory of the forest, where it benefits from the filtered light and consistently warm, moist conditions. It grows primarily in shaded areas, often near water sources or on fallen trees overhanging water.
 
Description: 
Reaches up to 40 cm tall. The inflorescences measure 30cm and bear many flowers that each measure 1cm across. The plant blooms during the summer and autumn. The colour of the labellum varies from red to pale orange.
 
This Bulbophyllum is an ideal backdrop for a terrarium or paludarium and is particularly suitable for biotypes made for lizards or snakes from west Indonesia and Malaysia.
 
Care Instructions: 
For optimal growth, Bulbophyllum gibbosum should be placed in moderate, indirect light. While it can tolerate some morning sun, too much direct sunlight can scorch its leaves. The plant thrives on a tree fern mount or in a well-draining potting mix, such as one designed for orchids, that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings to avoid root rot. I have seen this species growen sitting in water.
 
Maintain a warm, humid environment with daytime temperatures ranging from 24-29 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures between 15-22 degrees and daytime temperatures between 21-30 degrees. High humidity, ideally above 60%, is beneficial for keeping the leaves healthy and lush. Water the plant regularly and don’t let it dry out. Fertilize with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer at ¼ manufacturers guideline every watering to support vigorous growth and flowering.
