Habitat and Location:

Brunfelsia americana, commonly known as Lady of the Night, is native to Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, Trinidad-Tobago, Venezuela, and the Venezuelan Antilles. This flowering shrub thrives in warm, humid environments, typically found in the understory of tropical forests where it enjoys filtered sunlight and rich, well-draining soil. It is also cultivated as an ornamental plant in warm climates around the world, particularly in gardens and landscapes that emphasize fragrant night-blooming species.

Description:

Brunfelsia americana is a medium-sized (1.5-2 metres) shrub known for its glossy, deep green leaves and highly fragrant, tubular white flowers that bloom primarily at night. The flowers, which open in the evening, release a sweet, intoxicating scent that is particularly strong after dusk, attracting nocturnal pollinators such as moths. Over time, the flowers transition from white to creamy yellow, adding a delicate colour variation to the plant's overall aesthetic.

This species is highly prized for its nocturnal blooms and enchanting fragrance, making it a perfect choice for night gardens or as an ornamental shrub for bonsai or near patios and windows where the scent can be enjoyed. Its elegant appearance and perfumed blossoms make it a stunning addition to tropical and subtropical gardens alike.

Care Instructions:

Brunfelsia americana thrives in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate some direct sunlight, particularly in the morning or late afternoon. It prefers rich, well-draining soil with regular moisture, though it does not like to remain waterlogged. Water the plant regularly, ensuring the soil stays consistently moist, but reduce watering in cooler months.

Maintain warm daytime temperatures between 18-33 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures between 10-18 degrees Celsius. This tropical shrub does not tolerate frost. In regions with colder winters, it can be grown as a container plant and brought indoors during colder months. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season to promote lush foliage and abundant blooms. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain its shape and encourage further blooming.
