Habitat and Location:
Brasiliopuntia brasiliensis is an unusual succulent that grows into a small tree, native to the tropical semi arid areas of Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina. This species thrives in the seasonal open forests where it grows as a terrestrial in the undergrowth.
Description and Key Features:
Brasiliopuntia brasiliensis is noted for its ability to form a small cactus tree. In the wild plants attain 20 metres but cultivated plants are considerably less. The fruits are brightly coloured in shades of reds, oranges and yellows.
Care Instructions:
For optimal growth, Brasiliopuntia brasiliensis should be placed in bright light. Plant in a media consisting of grit, soil, sand, and gravel. Water the plant irregularly, keeping the media mostly dry. This species is ideal for a south facing window ledge or south facing conservatory.
Maintain an intermediate to warm environment with daytime temperatures ranging from 22-38 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures between 6-18 degrees Celsius. Brasiliopuntia brasiliensis prefers low humidity, ideally below 65%.
