Begonia vankerckhovenii is a sought after and distinctive species of Begonia, native to the tropical rainforests of Gabon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This species thrives in the humid, shaded understories of tropical forests, often growing on mossy rocks and in moss on the forest floors.
Description and Key Features:
Begonia vankerckhovenii is noted for its stunning foliage, characterized by large, asymmetrical leaves with a striking metallic sheen. The leaves are typically deep green to bronze with a prominent magenta coloured margin. This species also produces small, delicate yellow flowers, which emerge from the leaf axils.
Care Instructions:
For optimal growth, Begonia vankerckhovenii should be placed in shade. Plant in live sphagnum moss or other moss. Water the plant regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy, never allow the plant to dry. This species is ideal for terrariums.
Maintain an intermediate to warm environment with daytime temperatures ranging from 20-28 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures between 15-18 degrees Celsius. Begonia vankerckhovenii prefers high humidity, ideally above 65%, which can be maintained with regular misting or the use of a humidity tray.
