Habitat and Location:

Appendicula congenera, an epiphytic species endemic to Java and encountered in the wetter parts in the west of the island. Found lower down in the canopy in shade. Found at elevations between 400 and 900 metres.

Description and Key Features:

Appendicula congenera is an unusual species with darker coloured leaves flushed with red. The stems measure 15-25 cm long and do not branch. The inflorescences are shorter than the leaves and produce 2-4 flowers. The flowers are white, unscented and measure 8 mm. This species is perfect for a low light terrarium.

Care Instructions:

Grow Appendicula congenera on a mount, ensure sufficient air movement, especially in humidity above 50%. Stems can rot with lower air movement, particularly new growths when sprayed water stays in the leaf axils. Provide low light for growth and flowers, spray lightly daily to mimic natural moisture conditions increasing in frequency during warmer weather and maintain an intermediate or warm greenhouse/terrarium with night temperatures of 17-23 degrees and daytime temperatures of 24-31 degrees. Feed plants all year.
