Habitat and Location:
Aloe vera, commonly known as True Aloe or Medicinal Aloe, is a succulent plant native to Oman. It is now widely cultivated. This species inhabits arid and semi-arid environments, in sandy, well-draining soils and sunny conditions.
Description and Key Features:
Aloe vera is noted for its thick, fleshy leaves and soothing gel. The plant features rosettes of long, tapering green leaves that are often speckled with white and edged with small, soft teeth. These leaves can grow up to 60 cm long and contain a clear gel known for its medicinal and cosmetic properties. In addition to its therapeutic foliage, Aloe vera produces tall spikes of tubular yellow or orange flowers, which add to its ornamental appeal.
This species is a practical and attractive addition to any plant collection, whether in a garden during the summer, greenhouse, or as a houseplant.
Care Instructions:
For optimal growth, Aloe vera should be placed in full sun or bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some shade, but it thrives best with ample sunlight. Ensure the plant is in a well-draining soil mix, such as a cactus or succulent mix, to prevent waterlogging. Water the plant sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, and reduce the frequency during the cooler months when the plant's growth slows.
Maintain an environment with daytime temperatures ranging from 20-30 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures between 10-20 degrees Celsius. Aloe vera is highly tolerant of drought and can withstand high temperatures, making it suitable for xeriscaping. It prefers low humidity and is resistant to most pests and diseases, requiring minimal maintenance once established.
