Habitat and Location:

Alocasia chaii, is a tropical perennial plant native to the rainforests of Borneo at elevations between 500 – 800 metres. This terrestrial species thrives on the dark humid forest floor particularly on ultramafic (volcanic) surfaces and rocks.

Key Features:

Alocasia chaii has rigid leatery leaves which are rugose. The leaves measure up to 40 cm but are generally around 25 cm x 15 cm. Unlike Alocasia melo, the leaves do not have tiny red glands under the leaf. Cultivated plants bear more leaves than those in the wild. Flowers measure up to 7 cm and are red and white.

Alocasia chaii, is a species that resembles Alocasia melo and some authorities speculate whether they are conspecific. The flower is the real way to tell these apart. Alocasia melo is almost completely white where Alocasia chaii is white and red.

Care Instructions:

For optimal growth, Alocasia chaii needs to be placed in moderate light. While it can tolerate moderate light conditions, it will tolerate brighter light than other Alocasia including Alocasia melo. Ensure the plant is in a well-draining acidic soil mix, such as a combination of soil, perlite and orchid bark to maintain adequate moisture without waterlogging. Water the plant regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy, make sure this plant does not dry out completely.

Maintain a warm environment with daytime temperatures ranging from 19-27 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures between 14-22 degrees Celsius. Alocasia chaii prefers high humidity, so regular misting or placing the plant near a humidity tray can help maintain the desired moisture levels. This plant needs good air circulation and should be kept away from cold drafts or sudden temperature changes.
