Habitat and Location:
Alluaudia procera, commonly known as the Madagascar Ocotillo or Madagascar Spiny Bush, is a drought-resistant plant native to the arid regions of south west Madagascar. This species thrives in the spiny forests and dry scrublands (the same habitat that the ring tailed Lemur comes from). Plants grow in full sun and are found growing on rocky outcrops and in sandy soils.
Description and Key Features:
Alluaudia procera is noted for its tall, columnar stems covered in small, circular leaves and sharp spines. The leaves are light green, emerging directly from the stem, giving the plant a distinctive appearance. This species can grow up to 10-15 meters in height in its natural habitat, though it remains smaller when cultivated. It produces small, inconspicuous flowers, typically white or yellow, which are clustered along the stems.
Care Instructions:
For optimal growth, Alluaudia procera should be placed in full sun to bright light. It requires plenty of bright light to thrive, especially indoors. Ensure the plant is in a well-draining soil mix, such as a cactus or succulent blend, to prevent waterlogging. Water the plant sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, and reduce the frequency significantly during the cooler months when the plant's growth slows or enters dormancy.
Maintain a warm environment with daytime temperatures ranging from 22-36 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures between 10-15 degrees Celsius. Alluaudia procera prefers low humidity, typical of its native arid habitat. It is well-suited for indoor cultivation in bright locations or as an outdoor specimen in warm, dry climates. The plant is sensitive to frost and should be protected from cold temperatures.
