Aeschynanthus pulcher is a species found in Indonesia (Java, Kalimantan, Bali, Flores, Aru, Timor and Sumatra), Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. This epiphytic species inhabits wet lowland, hill or cloud forests or deciduous forests in seasonally dry habitat.

Description:

The stems are arching to pendent and measure 35-50 cm. The leaves are varied and range from a narrowly elliptic to an ovate shape and measure 1.5-3.0 cm. The calyx is maroon and the corolla is red with white spotting on the central lobe. Plants bloom during the autumn, winter or spring.

Culture:

Grow Aeschynanthus pulcher in a pot, basket or on a mossy mount. For a potting media, use a perlite, moss and fine bark mix. Make sure the plant gets sufficient air movement particularly when gown in humidity above 70%; always give Aeschynanthus moderate shade, although this species seems to grow well when placed in moderate light. Plants need to be grown in a wet and slightly dry cycle; I water this species once a week or when the potting mix starts looking dry and mounted plants get sprayed every day. This species likes an intermediate to warm greenhouse with night low temperatures of 15-24 degrees and daytime temperatures of 25-34 degrees. Plants will grow and flower indoors if warmth, air circulation, and reasonable light are provided.
