Habitat and Ecology:

Aeschynanthus andersonii is an epiphytic subshrub native to regions extending from southwestern and southern Yunnan in China to Peninsular Malaysia. It primarily inhabits wet tropical biomes, often found in lowland and hill dipterocarp forests, sometimes growing on bamboo. In Thailand, this species has been observed at elevations up to 700 meters.

Description:

This species exhibits erect stems, distinguishing it from most other Aeschynanthus species that may have pendulous or creeping growth habits. This species is much smaller than most others in the genus making it a plant of choice for a terrarium. The leaves are typically opposite, though in some cases, they may appear whorled. Flowers emerge from the apices of the stems and are red with white stamens.

Cultivation: To cultivate Aeschynanthus andersonii successfully, replicate its native warm and humid environment. Maintain daytime temperatures between 15°C to 20°C (65°F to 75°F) and daytime temperatures between 21°C to 28°C provide bright, indirect light. This species thrives in well-draining, semi-moist soil or on a mount. With potted plants allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings to help prevent root rot. High humidity levels are beneficial, so regular misting or placement in naturally humid areas like bathrooms is advantageous. Protect the plant from sudden temperature changes and avoid overwatering.
